When is it time to go to rehab?

In life, some things are crystal clear, others are a bit blurred. In the case of substance abuse, the signs are easy to spot if you’re paying attention. For those who continue to live in denial or proclaim that they ‘have it under control,’ here are 10 crystal-clear signs it’s time to go rehab.

If you’re exhibiting any one of these, experts agree that you are in need of help.

1) You’ve operated a motor vehicle while drunk or high

As the CHP says, buzzed driving is drunk driving. In the legal definition, if you’re in any way impaired, you’re subject to arrest. Being impaired means that your reaction times and judgment have been affected. At this point, you’re a danger to yourself and everyone else. It doesn’t matter if you’re a superb driver – the morgue is full of people who were great drivers but died while driving stoned or drunk.

Driving stoned or drunk isn’t just prevalent among young people. A study published on DrugAbuse.gov, in 2010, more than one-quarter of drugged drivers in fatal accidents were 50 years old or older. If you are unable to have the reasoning skills to realize that driving buzzed or impaired is not a good idea, you need to get help for your substance abuse issues.

 

2) It’s affecting your health

Over time, substance abuse affects the body and the mind. We all know that alcoholism causes severe damage to the heart, brain, and liver. Opiate abuse can slow down your breathing to the point of permanent brain damage. Continued use of stimulants can cause cardiovascular failure and psychosis. If you inject drugs, the needles you use can increase your risk of contracting deadly diseases like HIV or hepatitis C.

If your drug or alcohol use is causing tangible effects on your health, your body is telling you loud and clear that it’s not doing well. At this point, it’s time to go to rehab.

 

3) It’s affecting relationships

When things begin to change in personal or work relationships, it’s time to go to rehab. If you’re having conflicts with friends, bosses, co-workers, spouses or partners, there’s a high probability that your substance abuse is part of the problem. When a substance abuser is forced to stay sober for work, school or while in the presence of a friend or spouse, there’s a potential for withdrawal symptoms to cause friction. There’s plenty of tell-tale symptoms: headaches, nausea, cramps, insomnia, paranoia, irritability, or any number of other maladies that may surface within a few hours after your last hit or drink. The bad news? It’s not going to get better.  Withdrawal symptoms are one of the ways addiction reels you in, deeper and deeper.

A felony record has life-changing consequences. That record is stapled to every job application you’ll ever submit so before it gets that far, find a detox program.

 

6) Physical consequences

If you’ve harmed someone else or yourself, there are probably deeper rooted issues leading to your use of substances. Certain drugs can cause or increase depression and if any form of mental illnesses or emotional trauma is present, things can get out of control quickly. 7) Life-changing consequences

Have you been fired or reprimanded at work? Have you missed important obligations such as school? Has a relationship recently ended because of your substance abuse issue, either directly or indirectly? It’s time to take a step back and reevaluate your drug or alcohol use. In other words – you probably need to go to rehab. Getting help now may be your best chance of holding onto what you have.

 

8) You can’t seem to quit

Maybe you’ve tried to quit or cut down on your own, but despite your best efforts, you just can’t seem to do it. This is the power of addiction. At this point, it’s time to go to rehab. First, to get through the detox process. Then, to learn how to live a sober life. Treatment can and does work and the longer you stay in treatment, the greater your chances of recovery.

 

9) You’re lying about your problem

Lying includes making excuses – ‘oh, I only party on the weekends,’ or ‘I only do it at home.’  Any excuse is a form of a lie and any lying about your use of substances is a sure sign that you have a problem. Sooner or later, the house of cards crumbles and you’ll start to see the consequences of your actions, including any or all of the items listed above.

 

10) You’ve tried to stop, but can’t

If you’ve truly made an effort to quit on your own, you know how hard it can be. If you’ve tried avoiding the triggers – the people, the places and the things – but you still can’t succeed.
